The shadow pandemic: supporting survivors during covid-19
Insights from the frontline
Members of the PCAWA and community partners have been collecting data from frontline workers who provided supports related to gender-based violence during the COVID-19 pandemic. The perspectives captured are reflective of a broad landscape of service providers and community organizations in Peel such as emergency shelter and transitional housing, healthcare, settlement, legal aid & advocacy, employment, and food justice & security.
Our results demonstrated that there were significant increases in the demand for support, barriers to providing/accessing support, and experiences of precarity since the emergency order in March 2020. These dynamics have only been worsening in subsequent waves of the pandemic and the effects will be felt for decades to come, as confirmed by UN reporting measures.
Please see the final report for detailed breakdowns of our data and findings, as well as strategies to support frontline workers, organizational enhancements, and systems-level recommendations for the remainder of the COVID-19 crisis and recovery measures.
